San Jose, CaliforniaPayPal and its mobile payment application Venmo experienced significant outages on Thursday morning, marking a disruption for thousands of users across the United States.

According to reports from Down Detector, users encountered errors when trying to log in or access the services as early as 11:47 a.m. ET. At its peak, nearly 9,600 users reported issues with PayPal, while about 8,400 faced challenges with Venmo.

As the situation developed, both services acknowledged the ongoing problems on their respective X accounts, noting that technical teams were working to resolve the issues. “We are experiencing a system issue that may be impacting Homepage, Account, Braintree, and Venmo in our Production Environment,” PayPal stated.

By approximately 4:00 p.m. ET, the Down Detector reports indicated a decline in issues, with PayPal’s reports dropping to around 900 and Venmo to approximately 1,000. Despite these improvements, many users still expressed frustration over the inconvenience of being unable to access their funds.

One Down Detector user voiced their concerns, saying, “PayPal needs to figure this out. It’s literally manipulating people’s money and their lives.” Another user reported receiving an error message stating, “We’re having some trouble completing your request right now. Please try again shortly.”

As services began to return to normal, PayPal suggested users attempt to access their accounts again. “Please be assured that our team is working on the ongoing issue and will try to resolve it at the earliest,” Venmo stated in response to complaints on social media.

No official explanation has been given for the outage, and PayPal did not immediately return a request for comment. As the situation develops, updates will be provided to users monitoring the status of the platforms.
