Baton Rouge Bridge Collapse News

BATON ROUGE, La. — A pedestrian bridge near the former Belle of Baton Rouge riverboat casino collapsed Friday evening after a buoy system failed. The incident occurred around 5 p.m., with a portion of the bridge falling into the Mississippi River.

Officials confirmed that the failed floating buoy system was designed to help the bridge adjust to changing water levels. The Mississippi River was reported at approximately 41 feet on the day of the collapse, classified as a major flooding stage, with predictions to rise to 42 feet by May 2.

Belle of Baton Rouge casino officials have stated that the structure is secure and unlikely to suffer further damage. Security has been stationed to prevent public access to the collapsed walkway.

No injuries were reported, and paramedics indicated they were not responding to the scene. The collapsed pedestrian bridge prompted plans to remove all remaining buoys and bridges near the river.

Meanwhile, the Belle of Baton Rouge has been rebranded as Bally's, with the relocated casino awaiting rebrand approval from the Louisiana Gaming Commission. The riverboat was moved to Terrebonne Parish earlier this year for dismantling and recycling, according to reports by WBRZ.

This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
