BERWYN, Ill. (WLS) — A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train on Sunday afternoon, causing significant delays for Metra trains in the area, officials reported.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when the Amtrak Southwest Chief train #1003, traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, hit a pedestrian who was trespassing on the tracks, according to Amtrak officials. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, though their identity and personal details have not yet been disclosed.

Amtrak confirmed the fatality and reported that they are cooperating with local authorities. Meanwhile, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has been contacted for further information about the incident.

Due to the collision, Metra trains were halted in the Berwyn area and did not resume operations until approximately 7 p.m. Metra officials warned passengers to expect extensive delays as a result.
