STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The search for a new head coach at Penn State is reportedly underway following the departure of James Franklin, who spent over a decade with the program. Athletic director Pat Kraft now faces the challenge of filling the position left by Franklin, known for multiple double-digit win seasons.

Kraft’s approach is said to be extensive, considering candidates from various backgrounds. “This is a fantastic job with tremendous resources and the ability to win,” said an unnamed source. Penn State’s financial capabilities position it alongside elite schools like Alabama and Georgia, especially with a buyout for Franklin rumored to exceed $50 million.

One name emerging in the coaching conversation is Eli Drinkwitz, currently in his sixth season at the University of Missouri. His teams have been competitive, boasting a record of 21-5 over the past two seasons and starting the current season 5-1 after a close loss to No. 8 Alabama.

Drinkwitz’s prior success at Appalachian State, where he achieved a 12-1 season, drew Missouri’s attention years ago. His consistent performance has made him a leading candidate as various job opportunities arise in college football. CBS Sports analyst Tom Fornelli emphasized the importance of considering Drinkwitz, stating, “Eli Drinkwitz is a name that I think has to be on their list.”

While Nebraska‘s Matt Rhule, a former Penn State alum, is viewed as a top contender, Drinkwitz’s appeal may grow given his situation at Missouri. The potential of bringing back quarterback Beau Pribula, who transferred from Penn State to Missouri this season, could further entice him. Pribula has had a strong season, leading Missouri to a 5-1 record with impressive stats.

This development marks a potential homecoming for Pribula and signifies a new direction for Penn State football following Franklin’s tenure.
