Phil Lesh, the iconic bassist and a founding member of the legendary rock band The Grateful Dead, passed away on October 25, 2024, at the age of 84. The news was announced through his official Instagram account, stating that he passed peacefully and was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his death.

Lesh was a pivotal figure in The Grateful Dead, known for his innovative and dynamic bass playing style that significantly contributed to the band’s unique sound. Along with other original members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bobby Weir, Lesh was set to be honored by MusiCares as the 2025 Persons of the Year for their philanthropic efforts and contributions to music.

The Grateful Dead, formed in 1965, is celebrated for its enduring influence on rock music and its dedicated fan base. The band’s 60th anniversary was to be marked with this recognition, highlighting their lasting impact on the music industry.
