Pope Francis Highlights The Power Of Sports To Foster Peace

Pope Francis emphasized the significance of sports as a catalyst for peace and brotherhood in a fractured world. During a meeting with the members of Athletica Vaticana, the Vatican’s official amateur multi-sports association, the Pope expressed hope that sports could bridge gaps, dismantle barriers, and promote harmonious relationships, especially given the current global uncertainties. With Paris preparing to host this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Pope stressed the potential of sport to connect and foster peace.

The Holy Father commended Athletica Vaticana for its continuous efforts in promoting solidarity, inclusion, and fraternity, serving as a testament to the Christian faith among both amateur and professional athletes. The association’s initiatives, ranging from spontaneous local events to international sports competitions, embody a community united by their service to the Holy See and their commitment to sports as a means of evangelization.

Additionally, the Pope acknowledged Athletica Vaticana’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable, such as young people with disabilities, prisoners, migrants, and underprivileged families. He emphasized the importance of “closeness” in sports, which reflects the tenderness that God demonstrates towards humanity.

Pope Francis pointed out that sports not only provide an outlet for individuals to showcase their talents but also contribute to societal development. The values of universal fraternity, as emphasized by the Second Vatican Council, are exemplified through sports. Furthermore, sports teach us resilience and determination when confronted with limitations, offering a message of hope and courage, particularly to young people.

Concluding his address, Pope Francis encouraged the athletes of Athletica Vaticana to uphold the essence of sport, which lies in amateurism. He urged them to embrace sports as a way of life and contribute to building a more supportive community. The Pope called upon all athletes to embrace the values of loyalty, sacrifice, team spirit, commitment, inclusion, asceticism, and redemption, echoing the principles of Christian life.
