Pope Francis Stumbles as Walking Stick Snaps During Vatican Event
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis stumbled briefly while entering the Vatican auditorium for a Jubilee audience Saturday after the handle of his walking stick snapped. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has faced ongoing health challenges, avoided a fall with the help of two aides.
The incident occurred as Francis arrived at the Pope Paul VI Hall on Feb. 1, 2025. After the stumble, the pope was assisted to his chair on stage, where he proceeded to address the audience without further issues. A member of the crowd shouted “Viva il Papa,” prompting applause from attendees.
Francis has relied on walking aids in recent years due to chronic knee problems and other health concerns. This marks the third time in two months that the pope has experienced a public stumble. Earlier in January, he fell and injured his right arm, requiring a sling as a precaution. On Dec. 7, 2024, he reportedly hit his chin on a nightstand during another fall.
The pope has been open about his health struggles, including long bouts of bronchitis and mobility issues. He often uses a wheelchair or cane, particularly when moving around his residence at the Vatican’s Santa Marta hotel.
Speculation about Francis’ health has been a recurring topic in Vatican circles, especially since Pope Benedict XVI‘s historic resignation in 2013. Benedict, who cited declining health as a factor in his decision, passed away in 2022. Francis has repeatedly stated that he has no plans to resign, despite acknowledging that Benedict “opened the door” to the possibility.
In his recently released autobiography, “Hope,” Francis reflected on his health challenges, including a major intestinal surgery in 2021. He emphasized his commitment to continuing his papal duties despite his physical limitations.
Saturday’s event proceeded without further incident, with Francis delivering his address to the gathered faithful. The Vatican has not released additional details about the condition of the pope’s walking stick or whether it will be replaced.
