Portland Marathon Returns for 53rd Year This Sunday
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Marathon returns this Sunday for its 53rd year, welcoming thousands of runners to the streets of the Rose City. This long-standing event, which began in 1972 with a small group of participants on Sauvie Island, has grown into the longest-running consecutive marathon in the United States.
Over the years, the Portland Marathon has evolved significantly, moving into the city by 1977 and centering on downtown by 1984. This shift was designed to showcase city landmarks and bridges, enhancing the marathon experience for both participants and spectators.
As runners take to the streets, downtown traffic will be impacted. Several bridges will close to accommodate the marathon. City officials urge residents and visitors to plan ahead for potential delays.
The following closures are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 5:
-
Broadway Bridge: Closed from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
-
Burnside Bridge: Westbound lane closed from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
-
Morrison Bridge: South bike and pedestrian lane closed from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
-
Sellwood Bridge: Westbound lane closed from 6:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
-
Hawthorne Bridge: S.E. Water Avenue ramp closed from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
During these closure times, runners will utilize the bridges, and all other traffic lanes and sidewalks will remain open where possible.
Participants and fans are encouraged to enjoy this iconic Portland event while staying mindful of road closures and rerouted traffic.
