Potapova and Andreeva Advance in China Open Tennis Tournament

Beijing, China – In an exciting day at the China Open, Russia’s Anastasia Potapova and Mirra Andreeva both advanced to the third round on Saturday. Potapova upset No. 21 seed Victoria Mboko in a thrilling match, winning 7-6 (5), 7-5, while Andreeva breezed past Zhu Lin with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Potapova’s match against Mboko was filled with dramatic shifts and close calls. The 24-year-old faced an early challenge when Mboko, the reigning Canadian Open champion, broke her serve in the first game. However, Potapova quickly recovered, leveling the score on her fourth break point. Despite some intense moments where both players fought to gain the upper hand, Potapova managed to seal the first set after a tense tiebreak.
In the second set, the momentum continued to swing as Mboko served her eighth double fault, allowing Potapova to capitalize and take the lead. Even after Mboko fought back to serve for the set at 5-3, Potapova rallied, winning the final four games of the match.
“Ruthless! Potapova gets the job done against Mboko in straight sets,” the WTA tweeted.
Potapova converted five of her 16 break-point opportunities and will face Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez in the next round. Sonmez achieved her first career Top 20 win by upsetting No. 10 seed Clara Tauson.
Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva faced off against the local favorite Zhu Lin. The 18-year-old controlled the match, breaking early and maintaining her lead throughout, finishing the contest in just 1 hour and 19 minutes. The victory improves her record at WTA 1000 events this season to 21-5.
“I’m going to try not to think about last year and enjoy every match out here,” Andreeva commented after her win. “I want to go further than the quarterfinals.”
Andreeva’s next opponent will be Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, marking their first meeting at the WTA level.
The China Open continues to showcase thrilling tennis, with top-seeded Iga Swiatek also advancing on the same day with a swift win over Yuan Yue, further adding excitement to the tournament.
