Cornelia Power Outage Repair Excavator Incident

Cornelia, Georgia — Power has been restored to most customers in the Cornelia area as of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Initially, the outage affected 2,188 customers, according to findenergy.com.

By 4:57 p.m., only five customers remained without power, as shown on the Georgia Power outage map. The service disruption was caused by a citizen operating an excavator who accidentally struck a power pole, according to Matthew Kent, a Georgia Power PR & Communications Specialist for Media Relations.

“The outage took about an hour to restore customers,” Kent said, and added that fortunately, no injuries were reported following the incident. Georgia Power sent a text alert to customers notifying them of the outage. The alert estimated power restoration by 4:15 p.m.

The affected area included all of Cornelia and parts of the surrounding community, causing significant inconvenience to residents.
