Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates New Campus of Nalanda University in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a historic moment on June 19 as he inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Bihar, emphasizing the significance of the ancient educational site. The event, held close to the ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara in Rajgir, saw the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and key dignitaries.
During his visit to Nalanda Mahavihara’s remains, the Prime Minister planted a sapling of the Bodhi tree in the campus—a symbolic gesture connecting the new beginnings with ancient traditions from Bodh Gaya. The inaugural ceremony also welcomed 17 Ambassadors from participating countries, highlighting the University’s global outlook.
Established through the Nalanda University Act, 2010, the institution started with 14 students in a temporary location before the construction of the new campus began in 2017. Chancellor Arvind Panagariya and Interim Vice-Chancellor Abhay Kumar Singh graced the occasion, signifying a new chapter for the esteemed University’s legacy.
In his address, PM Modi echoed the spirit of Nalanda as a beacon of knowledge and cultural exchange. He envisioned it as a modern hub for intellectual pursuits, fostering global ties and showcasing India’s commitment to education. Referring to Nalanda’s ancient past, Modi called for a revival of its scholarly legacy.
The international collaboration at Nalanda University includes countries like Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, and Portugal, among others. Scholarships sponsored by entities like ASEAN-India Fund and BIMSTEC reflect the University’s inclusive approach towards education. Postgraduate, doctoral, and short-term courses form part of its comprehensive academic offerings.
PM Modi emphasized India’s role in global education by reaffirming support for Nalanda University’s growth. His visit not only celebrated the new campus but also renewed focus on nurturing India’s educational heritage. The event underlined Nalanda’s renaissance as a pivotal link between past wisdom and future aspirations.
