Prime Video to Launch “Game 7” Anthology Series Featuring Iconic Sports Moments
Prime Video is set to unveil a new anthology series titled “Game 7,” spotlighting some of the most thrilling and pivotal moments in sports history. The series will premiere on October 22 and remains highly anticipated by sports enthusiasts worldwide.
Mark Messier, a legendary figure in the NHL, and actor Danny DeVito serve as executive producers for the series, alongside Connor Schell from Words + Pictures. Schell is known for co-creating the acclaimed “30 for 30” series on ESPN, bringing a wealth of documentary storytelling experience to the project.
The series promises to captivate audiences by revisiting classic Game 7 matches across various sports. Among the highlights is the 1987 Stanley Cup Final, in which the Edmonton Oilers faced off against the Philadelphia Flyers. This series is remembered for being a fierce rematch following their 1985 clash and features prominently due to the Oilers’ remarkable performances during their dynasty era.
The 1987 finals saw the Oilers secure the Presidents’ Trophy, achieving a total of 106 points, with three of the top four scorers in the league hailing from the team. However, Ron Hextall of the Flyers provided formidable resistance, ultimately earning the Conn Smythe Trophy despite the Oilers’ victory. Game 7 at the Northlands Coliseum unfolded with the Oilers overcoming an initial 0-1 deficit due to penalties, with goals by Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and Glenn Anderson leading them to a defining victory.
Additionally, the anthology includes episodes on other monumental matches, such as the 2003 MLB ALCS showdown between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, the 2016 World Series featuring the Chicago Cubs against the Cleveland Indians, the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals pitting the New York Rangers against the Vancouver Canucks, and a 2006 NBA Western Conference Semifinal classic between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs.
Amazon MGM Studios expects “Game 7” to deliver exhilarating narratives that celebrate the glory, tension, and unpredictability of high-stakes sports competitions. The series trailer, which launched earlier this month, has already generated significant buzz among viewers and critics alike.
