Production Commences on ‘Peaky Blinders’ Film Starring Cillian Murphy
The highly anticipated ‘Peaky Blinders‘ movie, featuring the return of Cillian Murphy as the notorious gangster Tommy Shelby, has officially begun production. Fans received a first look at Murphy reprising his iconic role, with Netflix releasing images of the actor on set alongside Steven Knight, the creator of the original series. The news of the film’s production initiation was shared by Netflix on Monday.
The upcoming film will be directed by Tom Harper, who previously directed several episodes of the beloved series. ‘Peaky Blinders,’ known for its gripping storyline about the Shelby gang in post-World War I Birmingham, first premiered on BBC Two in 2013. The series later gained international popularity when Netflix acquired the rights to stream it in the United States. The show concluded its sixth and final season in 2022, and the announcement of a feature film was made earlier this year.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” said Cillian Murphy in a statement. “It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans.” Murphy, who will co-produce the film, emphasized the satisfaction of returning to the role that has captivated audiences worldwide.
In addition to Murphy, the film’s cast includes Barry Keoghan, who gained recognition and an Academy Award nomination for his role in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin.’ Keoghan, a Dublin native, joins the Birmingham-based production in a yet-to-be-revealed role as the film explores the Shelby family’s narrative, now extending into the second World War.
The series’ creator, Steven Knight, is responsible for writing the film and will co-produce alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason. Knight has described the film as an “explosive chapter” in the Shelby family’s saga, promising a narrative where “no holds are barred.”
Rebecca Ferguson has also been named among the cast, although Netflix has yet to disclose details about her character. The anticipation surrounding the film continues to build as it aims to deliver the same level of intensity and drama that fans have come to expect from the series.
Murphy’s return to ‘Peaky Blinders’ comes on the heels of his recent success in Christopher Nolan‘s biographical film ‘Oppenheimer.’ Portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer, the actor received an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award for his outstanding performance as the theoretical physicist credited with developing the atomic bomb during World War II.
