Protest Leads to Arrests at University of Michigan Amid Police Investigation
ANN ARBOR, MI – Three people were arrested Wednesday evening during a protest at the University of Michigan. The protest was organized by the TAHRIR Coalition, a group advocating for Palestine. Erek Mirque, a member of the coalition, reported the arrests, which occurred unexpectedly as demonstrators expressed their views against an on-campus event.
The situation escalated rapidly as local police intervened to manage the protest. Videos shared on social media showed officers confronting demonstrators, leading to the arrests. Mirque stated that the protest aimed to raise awareness about Palestine and was intended to be peaceful.
In a separate incident just hours later, Ann Arbor police responded to a potential firearm-related incident on Thursday morning. Authorities advised residents in and around the university to shelter in place while they investigated reports of possible shots fired.
The police shut down South Division Street between East Jefferson and Packard streets shortly after 8 a.m. Officers searched the area thoroughly, but no injuries or further incidents were reported. The investigation remained active as of Thursday morning.
These events have raised concerns among students and residents about campus safety and the handling of protests. University officials are expected to release a statement regarding the protests and ongoing police investigations.
