Push to Rename Nashville Airport After Dolly Parton Gains Traction

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A campaign to rename Nashville International Airport (BNA) after country music legend Dolly Parton is gaining momentum, boasting over 50,000 signatures since its launch in January. The petition, which aims to change the airport’s name to “Dolly Parton International Airport,” highlights the singer’s philanthropic efforts and impact on the local community.
The petition was initiated shortly after Tennessee lawmakers introduced legislation to rename the airport in honor of former President Donald Trump. Advocates for Parton’s renaming argue that her contributions to the state and the realm of music make her a more fitting representative for the airport.
“It is only fitting that an institution as significant as Nashville International Airport carries the name of such a remarkable woman,” the petition states. “Dolly has made substantial impacts on thousands of lives, especially through her Imagination Library program, which has gifted over 100 million books to children since it began in 1995.”
Dan Dion, one of the petition’s founders, remarked, “She really represents the best of what Nashvillians and Tennesseans can be. There is no other person that could bring us all together.”
Parton, often referred to as the Queen of Country, is celebrated not just for her music, but also for her extensive charitable work. The petition cites her dedication to philanthropy as a significant reason for the proposed name change.
Despite the growing support for the petition, there has been no formal comment from Tennessee lawmakers regarding its progress. Currently, BNA stands for Berry Field Nashville, named after the city’s first airport administrator. Critics of both renaming proposals point to this historical context as justification for maintaining the airport’s existing name.
To further their campaign, petition organizers encourage local residents to reach out to key decision-makers, including Rep. Todd Warner and Douglas Kreulen, CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. Kreulen’s support would be crucial, as he oversees the airport’s operations and any potential name alterations.
As the petition continues to gain traction, advocates are optimistic about the potential for change. “The more public support they see, the harder it will be to ignore this movement,” Dion noted.
In addition to the petition, Dolly Parton’s legacy is being celebrated with an upcoming exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibit, titled “Dolly Parton: Journey of a Seeker,” will showcase key moments from her over 60-year career and open on May 20, running through September 2026. It will feature various artifacts, iconic outfits, and personal memorabilia.
“Being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame was one of the greatest moments of my life,” Parton stated regarding the exhibit. “I hope you enjoy my journey. I will always love you.”
