Lonnie Johnson Nfl Defensive Back Signing

Las Vegas, NV — The Las Vegas Raiders have announced the signing of free agent defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr. on March 10, 2025, bolstering their secondary as the NFL season approaches. The agreement adds depth to the Raiders’ defense and enhances their special teams unit.

Johnson, who played for the Carolina Panthers last season, participated in 15 games, with one start, primarily contributing on special teams where he logged 339 snaps. He amassed seven tackles during his time in Carolina after making the transition to safety from cornerback.

Originally drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson has accumulated 199 tackles, four interceptions, and 155 passes defensed over his four-year career. His signing represents a strategic move for the Raiders, who are looking to solidify their safety positions.

This is not the first free agency move for the Raiders on March 10. Earlier in the day, they secured Jeremy Chinn, a safety from the Washington Commanders, signaling a revamped approach to their defensive backfield. Johnson joins Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao on a roster that features three safeties standing at least 6 feet 2 inches tall.

“We’re excited about what Lonnie brings to our team,” said a team representative. “His experience and versatility will be invaluable as we continue to build our roster for the upcoming season.”

While Johnson brings potential as a depth player, the Raiders’ defensive scheme remains to be seen as they adjust with new personnel. The team aims for improved performance after a challenging previous season, and Johnson’s ability to contribute on special teams is expected to make an impact.

Johnson’s signing marks a pivotal moment in the Raiders’ free agency strategy, as they seek to improve their defensive lineup. With the NFL free agency period underway, teams across the league are making significant moves to enhance their rosters, and the Raiders appear to be no exception, actively reshaping their squad.

The Raiders will look for Johnson to adapt quickly to his new role as they head toward the draft and training camp. As the franchise eyes a return to playoff contention, decisions made in these early days of free agency will be crucial for setting the tone.
