Raleigh Police Officer Shooting Democracy Street

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A Raleigh police officer was seriously injured and a suspect was killed during a shootout in the Renaissance Park neighborhood Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. in the 600 block of Democracy Street, south of downtown Raleigh.

According to Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce, officers responded to a call at a residence when an individual opened fire. “Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect,” Boyce said during a media briefing. The officer was transported to a local hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a heavy police presence in the area. Carlos Jenkins, a local resident, described the scene as chaotic, comparing it to a video game. “I would describe it as like GTA (Grand Theft Auto). You don’t ever see this many police out here,” Jenkins told WRAL News.

Raleigh Police Department (RPD) issued an emergency alert advising residents to stay indoors and avoid the area. Streets were blocked, and the neighborhood was temporarily locked down as officers secured the scene. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

By 7:30 p.m., police issued an all-clear for the Renaissance Park neighborhood, allowing residents to return to their homes. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed the nature of the initial call that prompted the police response.
