Wayne Shaw Oakland Shooting 49th Avenue

OAKLAND, Calif. — Wayne Shaw, the 61-year-old brother of legendary rapper Too $hort, was fatally shot Wednesday morning during an attempted robbery at a marijuana grow house in East Oakland, authorities confirmed.

Oakland police responded to the 1200 block of 49th Avenue near East 12th Street around 7 a.m. after receiving multiple reports of gunfire and alerts from the ShotSpotter system. Officers found Shaw suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Highland Hospital, where he later died.

Preliminary investigations suggest that suspects attempted to use a vehicle to force entry into the property where Shaw was located. Shaw exited the building and was confronted by the suspects, who shot him multiple times, according to police.

Sources close to the investigation said Shaw was operating and living in the marijuana grow house at the time of the shooting. Authorities believe the incident was a botched robbery attempt.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. The Oakland Police Department has not confirmed whether the property was a marijuana grow house or released further details about the suspects.

Wayne Shaw was the older brother of Todd Shaw, known professionally as Too $hort, a prominent figure in West Coast hip-hop. The rapper, who has not yet publicly commented on the incident, grew up in Oakland and has frequently referenced the city in his music.

This marks the latest in a series of violent incidents in Oakland, where crime rates have been a growing concern for residents and officials. The city has seen a spike in shootings and robberies in recent years, prompting calls for increased police presence and community intervention programs.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Oakland Police Department.
