Rayne Faces Flooding, Power Disconnections Amid Heavy Rains

RAYNE, La. — Severe thunderstorms dumped between 7 to 8 inches of rain on Rayne Saturday afternoon, triggering widespread flash flooding and prompting electrical crews to disconnect power in affected areas.
The intense downpour forced residents and travelers to navigate hazardous conditions as floodwaters surged, resulting in stalled vehicles and impassable roads. Local resident Dale Moore characterized the deluge, stating, “I ain’t seen this much water in Rayne in 40 years,” reflecting on the storm’s severity.
As rain continued to fall, flash flooding escalated quickly, leading local officials to take precautionary measures to ensure safety. In response to flooding in Holt Addition behind Rayne High School, electrical crews announced that they would intentionally disconnect power to streets served by Ground Transformers, including East, F, G, H, and I Streets, as well as Gossen Park.
“We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is necessary for everyone’s safety,” a representative from the electrical crew stated. “Nearly 7 inches of rainfall has overwhelmed local canals, and we must allow nature to take its course.”
Other areas with Ground Transformers experiencing rising waters may also face power disconnections. Local officials are urging residents to stay off the roads and be cautious as the floodwaters pose dangers.
Many residents, including Moore, took the initiative to prepare for the flooding. Moore made sandbags to protect not only his home but also those of his neighbors. He appealed to community members, advising, “Oh, stay indoors; don’t be driving for sure. It’s very dangerous.”
Officials reiterated the importance of public safety and informed citizens that sightseers drawn to the flooding are exacerbating the situation, potentially causing further damage by pushing water. With conditions still deteriorating, residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed local warnings.
