REAL ID Enforcement Begins Amid Concerns About Travel Restrictions

SPOKANE, Wash. – As the May 7 deadline for obtaining enhanced driver’s licenses approaches, residents in Spokane face longer wait times at DMV offices due to the new REAL ID requirements.
Chase Smith, who recently got a job, shared his thoughts on the process. “Word of advice is to make an appointment online. I did a walk-in and I’ve already been here for 30 minutes, and people are walking in right now with over a two-hour wait,” Smith said.
Smith noted that the new documentation for a REAL ID is complicated, adding, “…and that’s just to renew it. It’s a bit overwhelming for people.”
Thomas Charleson from Washington‘s Department of Licensing explained that there are alternative identification options for air travel, such as a passport or Nexus card. “They can use that so they don’t necessarily need an enhanced driver’s license,” Charleson stated.
Despite the challenges, some see the REAL ID as a simplification. Smith mentioned, “One less document you have to keep track of… It’ll make it a lot easier on people instead of always keeping an eye on that passport and knowing where they always put it.”
In the Spokane and Spokane Valley areas, driver’s license offices are accepting appointments 30 days in advance. “For Spokane and Spokane Valley, we do have appointments available now in June,” Charleson added.
As the new regulations come into play, residents must act quickly to secure the necessary documentation or face travel delays.
