NEW YORK, NY – The deadline for travelers to obtain a REAL ID-compliant identification is fast approaching. Starting May 7, travelers who do not have a REAL ID will face challenges when flying domestically within the U.S.

The REAL ID requirement was enacted as part of federal legislation aimed at enhancing national security following the September 11 attacks. Many states have issued REAL IDs, which feature a star in the upper right corner, to serve as valid identification for boarding flights and accessing federal buildings.

Although an estimated 75% of Americans are already in compliance with the REAL ID requirements, long lines are reported at many Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) as individuals scramble to obtain theirs. Notably, those flying without a REAL ID will experience potential delays and may even be denied entry to the airport security checkpoint.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has advised that even individuals with TSA PreCheck are not exempt from this requirement. Alternative forms of identification such as U.S. passports, enhanced driver’s licenses, and military IDs will still be accepted.

If you lack a REAL ID or another accepted form of identification, TSA officials will ask you to undergo an identity verification process. This process involves collecting personal information to confirm your identity. Travelers must comply, or they may be prohibited from passing through security.

Travelers are encouraged to gather necessary documents to apply for a REAL ID, including proof of legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and two proofs of address. Local DMVs can provide specific details about what documentation is required.

It is essential to check the TSA’s list of acceptable forms of ID before traveling, as policies may change. The clock is ticking, and if you’re planning to fly soon without a REAL ID, now is the time to act.
