Recall Alert: Soft Ripened Cheeses Sold at Aldi, Market Basket, and Other Stores Due to Listeria Concerns
A significant recall has been issued for several types of soft ripened cheeses sold at retailers including Aldi and Market Basket due to potential contamination with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. The recall was announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and involves seven types of ripened cheese produced at a facility in Lena, Illinois, by Savencia Cheese USA of New Holland, Pennsylvania[1][3].
The recalled cheeses include Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, Supreme Oval, La Bonne Vie Brie and Camembert, Industrial Brie, Market Basket Brie, and Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie. These products have best-buy dates of December 24, 2024, and January 13, 2025, and were manufactured between late September and mid-October 2024[1][3].
In addition to the cheese recall, a separate recall involves turkey sandwiches containing the recalled cheese, sold under the CIBUS Fresh, Jack & Olive, and Sprig and Sprout labels in six states: Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee. These sandwiches have expiration dates ranging from November 2 to November 9, 2024.
The FDA and CDC have emphasized that listeria infections are particularly dangerous for the young, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Although no adverse health effects have been reported as of the recall date, consumers are advised to not eat the recalled products and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund[1][3].
Consumers with questions can contact Savencia Cheese USA at 800-322-2743 or via email at [email protected]. The recall is a precautionary measure after routine testing found equipment at the manufacturing facility to be potentially contaminated with listeria[1][3].
