Memorial Day Weekend Travel 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 14, 2025) — Over 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day weekend, according to a report from AAA. This marks an increase of 1.5 million travelers compared to last year, setting a new record for the holiday.

The Memorial Day weekend is traditionally seen as the unofficial start of summer, with many families taking advantage of the long weekend. AAA’s Vice President Stacey Barber emphasized that ‘Memorial Day weekend getaways don’t have to be extravagant and costly.’ Instead, she noted that many families plan close trips to the beach or visit friends.

Approximately 87% of travelers will opt to drive this weekend, with lower gas prices compared to last year being a significant factor in this choice. AAA reports that gas prices are currently more than 40 cents per gallon cheaper than in 2024.

This year, the Memorial Day travel period spans from May 22 to May 26. Major travel destinations include popular cities such as Orlando, Seattle, and New York. Orlando ranks at the top, driven by its theme parks and events.

The anticipated surge in travel reflects the willingness of Americans to spend quality time with loved ones after a challenging few years. Memorial Day serves as a time for remembrance, particularly for military personnel who sacrificed their lives for the country. AAA encourages travelers to remain safe and plan ahead for the busy roads and airports.

As families prepare for the long weekend, a notable increase in air travel is also expected, as airport traffic is projected to rise. Despite the solidifying patterns in travel, AAA advises travelers to maintain safety protocols while enjoying their summer trips.
