Red Flag Warning Issued for Northern Minnesota Due to Fire Risk

CHANHASSEN, Minn. — A Red Flag Warning will go into effect across northern Minnesota on Saturday due to heightened fire dangers. The warning is prompted by strong winds and low humidity levels.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that the warning will begin at 11 a.m. and last until 10 p.m. It covers nine counties: Beltrami, Clearwater, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau.
“When fire risk is this high, it’s important to be careful with anything that could spark a wildfire,” said Karen Harrison, a DNR wildfire prevention specialist. She emphasized the need for caution in those areas.
Officials are urging residents to avoid all open burning and ensure that any recent fire coals are fully extinguished. Furthermore, the DNR will not issue any new open burning permits and is advising against having campfires.
This warning comes amidst nearly 500 reported wildfires in Minnesota since April 1, posing threats to property and lives. William Glesener, DNR wildfire operations supervisor, reiterated the dangers of wildfires, stating, “Just like a house fire, a wildfire is extremely dangerous and unpredictable and should be left to the experts to manage.”
Residents are urged to call 911 if they spot a wildfire or accidentally ignite one, as wildland firefighters are trained to handle such emergencies. The DNR has also requested that people adhere to strict fire safety measures during this period of elevated fire danger.
