Remembering Alma Powell: A Legacy of Support and Service
Alma Powell, the beloved wife of retired General Colin Powell and a dedicated advocate for children and families, has passed away at the age of 86. Her family confirmed that she died on July 28 at a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, though they did not disclose the cause of her death.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 27, 1937, Alma was known for her unwavering support of her husband’s distinguished military and political career. The couple faced numerous relocations, moving over 20 times during Colin Powell’s service, which gave Alma a unique understanding of the challenges military families face.
After marrying Colin Powell in 1962, just before he left for Vietnam, Alma dedicated her life to raising their three children—Michael, Linda, and Annemarie. She always maintained that no matter where they lived—from Virginia to Germany—home was wherever she was able to be with her family.
Alma Powell was not only a committed military spouse but also an active civic leader. She helped co-found America’s Promise Alliance in 1997, an organization that focuses on youth development and engagement. Her ambition also shone through in her work as a two-time author of children’s books aimed at encouraging community service.
In addition to her advocacy work, Alma was involved in various boards and advisory councils, including an appointment to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by President Bill Clinton and service on an advisory board for historically Black colleges and universities appointed by President Barack Obama.
She was known for her strength and grace, often as a guiding force in Colin Powell’s life. He famously described her as the greatest person he had ever known during what would be his last interview with the press. Colin Powell passed away in 2021 from complications related to COVID-19.
Alma’s legacy will live on in the many lives she touched through her community service, her family, and her unwavering support for her husband throughout his remarkable career. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
