Remembering Angela Lansbury on Her 100th Birthday

NEW YORK, NY — Angela Lansbury, a beloved actress and six-time Tony Award winner, passed away on October 11, 2022, just days before her 97th birthday. Today, October 16, 2025, we celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday with reflections from Tom Rhoads, her assistant and close friend for over 13 years.
Reflecting on their first encounter, Rhoads remembered the cold, snowy day in February 2009 when he was asked to pick up Lansbury for a rehearsal. As a recent theatre graduate, he felt a rush of excitement when he realized he was going to meet a childhood hero. “I remember as a child seeing ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and her voice as Mrs. Potts in ‘Beauty and the Beast,'” Rhoads said, recalling his nerves as he approached her apartment.
During their time together, Lansbury was a supportive mentor. Rhoads recalled the moment she handed him a sterling silver pendant marked with the word “Angie.” It was a gift from Lansbury, who expressed her belief in his talent and encouraged him to shine in his career. “Now go show them how great you are!” she told him.
As their friendship blossomed, Lansbury consistently attended Rhoads’ performances, often accompanied by a heartfelt note. Rhoads noted, “There were many amazing moments, but her being there for me in my performances meant the world.”
One memorable experience was at the opening of ‘Blithe Spirit,’ where the audience erupted in applause for Lansbury’s curtain call. Rhoads described the overwhelming excitement he felt being part of that production. “Seeing her receive such adoration was a privilege,” he said.
Another significant moment happened when Lansbury invited Rhoads to celebrate her 90th birthday. The gathering included friends from the theater world, encapsulating the warmth and joy she brought to others.
Rhoads also enjoyed sharing meals with Lansbury, including a memorable lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf after the SF opening of ‘Blithe Spirit.’ Despite the fog, it was a special time for Rhoads, who relished their conversations and laughter.
Throughout their years together, Rhoads appreciated Lansbury’s authenticity and wisdom, often prompting him to believe in himself when doubts arose. “We were principals in this business,” Lansbury reminded him, highlighting the journey’s challenges.
As they reminisce today on Lansbury’s 100th birthday, Rhoads reflects on the love, lessons, and cherished memories he holds close. “She always made me feel like I was special and capable,” he said. “Her spirit continues to inspire.”
