Bette Nash, the world’s longest-tenured flight attendant, passed away at the age of 88 after a remarkable 67-year career serving the skies. American Airlines confirmed her death in a memo to flight attendants, highlighting her dedication and passion for the industry.

Starting her aviation journey in 1957 with Eastern Airlines in Washington, D.C., Nash’s commitment saw her through the transition to American Airlines. Despite having the opportunity to choose any route globally, Nash prioritized the DC-NY-Boston Shuttle to be home every night for her son, who has Down syndrome.

In 2022, Nash made headlines by receiving the Guinness World Record for her unparalleled tenure as a flight attendant. Brady Byrnes, the senior vice president of Inflight & Premium Guest Services at American Airlines, praised Nash’s magnetic personality and service-oriented mindset, noting her influence on the entire airline industry.

Reflecting on her early years in the aviation sector, Nash recalled the stringent regulations on weight and personal relationships that flight attendants faced. She revealed tales of being monitored at home to ensure she lived alone, as well as facing weight checks and potential suspension for fluctuations in weight.

Over the years, Nash remained dedicated to her role, attending regular flight attendant training in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Her professionalism and excellence earned her a legacy as an industry icon and a role model for aspiring flight attendants.

American Airlines paid tribute to Nash in the memo, recognizing her impact and expressing heartfelt condolences. The airline bid farewell to a remarkable individual with the words, ‘Fly high, Bette. You’ll be missed.’
