I 435 Highway Closure Power Lines Accident

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – Westbound Interstate 435 at Roe Avenue has reopened after being closed in both directions early Wednesday morning due to an accident involving a semi-truck and downed power lines. The incident resulted in only minor injuries, but necessitated significant response efforts from local authorities.

The collision occurred when a semi-truck struck power lines, causing multiple lines to fall across the highway. As a result, Evergy, the local power company, temporarily shut down the interstate to manage the hazardous situation. “Traffic is being diverted to Roe Avenue for eastbound I-435, which remains closed at Roe while crews work to ensure safety,” stated the Overland Park Police in an official update.

As of 5:35 a.m. Wednesday, westbound I-435 has been cleared and reopened. However, eastbound traffic continues to be diverted at Nall Avenue due to ongoing repairs from the downed lines. The Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Transportation are assisting with the situation.

At the height of the storm, Evergy reported over 66,000 customers without power in the Kansas City metro, with additional outages in the BPU service area. Furthermore, the National Weather Service had issued a Winter Weather Advisory warning for the area, highlighting slippery road conditions and gusts reaching up to 50 mph.

“The blizzard warning has ended, but residual effects continue, causing challenges on the roads,” said KSHB 41 Meteorologist Lindsey Anderson. “Travelers are advised to remain cautious, especially in light of the ongoing winter weather advisory that is expected to last until 9 a.m.”

The storm’s impact led to the cancellation of FanFest and pep rallies for the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship, although tournament games are proceeding as scheduled. Local schools are also beginning to announce closures and delayed start times due to weather conditions.
