Rep. Jasmine Crockett Inspires Temple Students with Campaign Trail Stories and Advocacy
Democratic United States Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas recently visited Temple University‘s Main Campus to address the Black Law Student Association, just days before the 2024 election. Crockett shared her personal and professional journey, including her early days in politics and her rise to national prominence.
Crockett recalled her first major political campaign, where she faced a well-established opponent who was middle-aged, white, and male. Despite the odds, Crockett’s determination and faith played a significant role in her subsequent political successes. She quoted Shakespeare’s Hamlet, suggesting that her initial loss was part of a larger plan, and noted that she has not lost an election since then.
The congresswoman and attorney engaged the audience with anecdotes during her hour-long talk at the Center for Antiracism in Mazur Hall. Her dynamic presence and compassion for her constituents were highlighted by Africology and African American studies professor Timothy Welbeck, who praised her as being “just as dynamic as she appears on television”.
Crockett is also known for her impactful commentary during congressional hearings. Notably, she had a memorable exchange with Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, where Greene made a personal attack on Crockett’s appearance. Crockett responded with a witty remark that did not violate House rules but garnered significant attention and applause.
Crockett’s career milestones include being named a national co-chair for Vice President Kamala Harris‘s campaign and becoming the first Black woman to address the Democratic convention in prime-time during her first term. She credits Harris for these opportunities and spoke about various issues, including voting rights and the Heritage Foundation‘s Project 2025.
