Rep. Jim McGovern Announces Death of Daughter Molly in Italy

WORCESTER, Mass. — Congressman Jim McGovern announced on Thursday the unexpected death of his daughter, Molly McGovern, while she was visiting a friend in Italy. Molly, who had recently completed a semester abroad in Australia, passed away under circumstances described as sudden by the family.
The McGovern family, including Rep. McGovern’s wife, Lisa, and their son, Patrick, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement. They mentioned Molly had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer but faced her illness with remarkable strength.
“Even as she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity, refusing to let her illness slow her down,” the family said. “Molly radiated pure joy. She lit up every room with her beaming smile, full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant.”
The family described Molly as someone who brought joy to those around her, noting her kindness, loyalty, and ability to make everyone feel special. “She treated people with compassion and kindness, always standing up for the underdog and making fast friends wherever she went,” they said.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her condolences, stating she was “heartbroken for the McGovern family” and recognized Molly’s positive impact on others. “Molly was a light in her family’s lives and the lives of so many,” Healey added.
Rep. McGovern serves the 2nd Congressional District of Massachusetts and is known for his efforts in legislative matters, including his recent advocacy for detained students. The family’s statement concluded with a note of love, saying, “We love you, Molly. We miss you already.”
