Veteran radio presenter Richard Glover has announced his departure from ABC Radio Sydney‘s Drive program after 26 years. Glover, a prominent figure at the public broadcaster, shared the news with his listeners on Friday, acknowledging it was a difficult decision to make.

Glover expressed his gratitude to his audience, describing them as “funny, wise, full of intellect, but also willing to share some of the deeper stories of being human.” He highlighted the unique opportunities the program offers, encompassing politics, literature, music, and comedy.

In a statement, Glover remarked, “I’ve hogged one of the best jobs in Australian journalism for long enough,” indicating his readiness for a transition. While he hinted at potential future opportunities with the ABC, Glover stated his immediate plans include continuing to write his column for The Sydney Morning Herald, working on a new book, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Highlighting his affection for radio, Glover emphasized its resilient nature, stating, “Despite the regular predictions of the death of radio over the decades, the platform has a strong future.” He spoke fondly of the medium, declaring that “radio has the best pictures” since “the listener fills in the details.”

Glover, who began his tenure at ABC in the morning slot in 1996 before transitioning to Drive in 1998, has hosted numerous famed guests, including the likes of Bill Bryson, Clive James, and Dolly Parton. His program also gained renown for engaging with memorable listener stories, such as the heartfelt 2012 broadcast involving the 35th anniversary of the Granville train disaster.

ABC Radio Sydney’s managing director, David Anderson, praised Glover’s contributions, describing him as a “once-in-a-generation broadcaster” praised for balancing news and engaging storytelling. The network is yet to announce his successor, although prime speculation surrounds the impending decision.

Glover’s final show on Drive is slated for November 29 and will feature a special edition of Thank God It’s Friday, with comedians Tommy Dean and Wendy Harmer among his final guests. Meanwhile, ABC Radio Sydney is working through a recovery from recent low ratings, with the last surveys showing improvements in audience figures.
