Robbie Williams Officiates Impromptu Wedding at NYC Film Screening
NEW YORK, N.Y. — British pop star Robbie Williams added ‘wedding officiant’ to his list of unexpected talents during a New York City screening of his documentary, ‘Better Man,’ this weekend. The singer, who is ordained through Universal Ministries, presided over a spontaneous ceremony for an audience member and their fiancé, creating a memorable moment at the event.
“At today’s BETTER MAN Q&A in NYC, Robbie Williams was vulnerable, receptive to the audience’s energy, took time to have a heart to heart with his daughter, and then a man in the audience asked him, as an ordained minister, to officiate a marriage with his fiancé,” blogger Ezra Cubero wrote on social media. “Incredible.”
Williams, known for hits like ‘Angels’ and his time with the band Take That, humorously clarified the ceremony’s legal status before proceeding. “By the power vested in me by absolutely nobody — it’s not legally-binding, but it’s legally-binding in your heart and your heart and my heart,” he said, holding a giant slushie from the theater concessions stand.
The impromptu wedding marked another unusual chapter in Williams’ history with officiating. In 2002, he became ordained online to marry two of his best friends, The Cult bassist Billy Morrison and Jennifer Holiday, in West Hollywood. His latest ceremony, while not legally recognized, added a touch of romance to the New York screening.
‘Better Man,’ which chronicles Williams’ rise to fame, personal struggles, and career milestones, debuted in the U.S. this weekend with a modest $1.1 million opening. The documentary, already released in Australia on December 26, offers an intimate look at the artist’s life, from his childhood to his time with Take That and his solo career.
As the newlyweds celebrated their unconventional ceremony, Williams returned to the stage, proving once again that his talents extend far beyond music.
