In a surprising twist, Robert Downey Jr. is making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor, famous for his role as Iron Man, will now play the iconic supervillain Doctor Doom in two upcoming Avengers movies: Avengers: Doomsday, set for a May 2026 release, and Avengers: Secret Wars, coming in May 2027.

The exciting announcement came from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during the recent San Diego Comic-Con panel. He revealed that the beloved Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joseph Russo, will be directing both films.

Downey, who originally debuted in the MCU back in 2008 with Iron Man, expressed excitement about his new role. From the stage, he quipped, “Same mask, new task,” as he gears up to portray Victor von Doom, a classic villain from the Fantastic Four universe.

This return marks a thrilling moment for fans, especially since Downey’s last appearance in the MCU was in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, where his character met a heroic end. In a previous interview, Downey mentioned he would be open to returning to the franchise, emphasizing how integral it is to him.

Interestingly, Avengers: Doomsday was previously titled The Kang Dynasty, but due to the recent controversies surrounding Jonathan Majors, the film underwent a rebranding.

Downey’s announcement featured a dramatic reveal with masked actors portraying Doctor Doom’s minions. Not only did this create a buzz among the audience, but it highlighted the complexity of the character, as pointed out by Joe Russo.

As the Marvel franchise continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Downey’s Doctor Doom will impact the storyline and what thrilling adventures await in the universe he helped create.
