Roommate Acquitted in 2007 Stabbing Death of Minot State Student

FARGO, N.D. — Nearly 18 years after the tragic death of 18-year-old Anita Knutson, her roommate, Nichole Rice, was found not guilty of murder in a trial that captivated the nation. Knutson was discovered dead in her off-campus apartment at Minot State University on June 4, 2007, with stab wounds to the chest.
The case stood cold for over 15 years until renewed investigations led to Rice’s arrest on March 16, 2022. The Minot Police Department credited the television series ‘Cold Justice’ with reviving interest in the case after inconsistencies in Rice’s alibi emerged, along with claims of drunken confessions. Rice was charged with a Class AA felony murder.
During the trial, which began on March 18, 2025, prosecutors argued that Rice killed her roommate during an argument over daily annoyances. They presented testimony from former acquaintances who claimed Rice had confessed to the killing in a drunken state. However, the defense argued that there was no direct evidence linking Rice to Knutson’s death, highlighting that DNA found at the scene did not match Rice’s.
The jury deliberated for less than six hours, ultimately clearing Rice of all charges on March 26, 2025. Following the verdict, Rice was seen breaking down in tears while family members supported her. Meanwhile, Knutson’s family expressed disappointment, stating that a not guilty verdict does not equate to innocence.
In the years since Knutson’s murder, her family has continued to seek justice. Knutson’s relatives have spoken about her being a loving and caring individual. Her sister, Anna Knutson, shared how the family was devastated not only by Anita’s death but also by the subsequent loss of their brother, who died by suicide in 2013.
The courtroom reaction following the verdict drew criticism, and Rice’s legal team later issued an apology for their emotional response. After the trial, Rice stepped out of the public eye, focusing on her family life and remaining married to Dallas Rice.
The case continues to resonate in the community, reminding many of the unresolved tragedy of Anita Knutson.
