Russian Forces Capture British National Fighting for Ukraine in Kursk Region
Russian forces have captured a British national who was fighting alongside Ukrainian troops in the partially occupied Kursk region of Russia, according to reports from the Russian state news agency Tass. The captured individual, identified as James Scott Rhys Anderson, was a former signalman in the British army who later joined the International Legion of Ukraine, a unit formed early in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Anderson reportedly served as an instructor for Ukrainian troops and was deployed to the Kursk region against his will. A video published by Tass shows Anderson stating in English that he does not want to be in the current situation. This incident, if confirmed, could be the first publicly known case of a Western national captured on Russian soil while fighting for Ukraine.
The capture comes amidst ongoing intense military activities in the region. Recently, Russia has launched significant aerial attacks on Ukraine, including the use of hundreds of deadly glide bombs and an intermediate-range ‘Oreshnik’ ballistic missile. These attacks have resulted in injuries and highlighted the need for Ukraine to improve its air defenses to counter Russian aerial assaults.
The conflict in the Kursk region is part of the broader Russia-Ukraine war, which has seen escalating tensions and frequent exchanges of fire between the two sides. The situation remains volatile, with international calls for a negotiated end to the conflict).
