Sacramento Prepares for Leaf Season as Stormy Weather Approaches
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As stormy weather approaches the region, city officials are urging residents to help maintain clear storm drains during leaf season to avoid flooding.
Leaf season officially kicked off on Monday, activating a unique service known as “The Claw,” which will collect excess green waste from city streets until January. This initiative helps manage the growing piles of leaves accumulating in neighborhoods throughout Sacramento.
City spokesperson Jesa David emphasized the importance of keeping roadways clear. “You definitely want to keep an eye out for your pile,” David said. “Leaves can quickly become very heavy and waterlogged, blocking storm drains and bike lanes, which poses a safety risk and could lead to localized flooding.”
Residents are encouraged to first fill their green bins with leaves before piling any overflow on the street for collection. It is crucial to leave sufficient space between leaf piles and the curb to ensure that water can flow freely to the storm drains.
To assist residents, the city provides an online collection calendar where individuals can enter their addresses to find out specific collection dates. Additionally, the free “Sac-Recycle” app offers reminders, though collection dates are subject to change.
Concerns regarding flooding should be reported to the city’s 311 hotline for prompt assistance.
