On a recent episode of BBC Breakfast, co-host Sally Nugent candidly admitted to her sleep challenges during a discussion with fellow presenter Jon Kay. The conversation was prompted by a new study on sleep, published in the journal Plos Biology, which was highlighted in the 9 October press. This research, conducted by Aalto University and University of Oulu in Finland, suggests that a poor night’s sleep can impact an individual’s brain for up to a fortnight.

During the segment, Jon Kay, aged 54, remarked on a topic of mutual interest among the team: “One subject we’re all obsessed with here, the entire team, is sleep. It’s the first thing we talk about every morning, how did you sleep last night? You had a bad night’s sleep?” Sally Nugent, aged 53, responded by sharing her personal experience from earlier in the week. “Oh, Sunday night Jon, I did the programme Monday morning on an hour’s sleep didn’t I?” she admitted, to which Jon humorously replied, “An hour? You lucky thing!”

Sally elaborated, “I know, it was really not good! It was just one of those nights where you can’t sleep.” On being asked if she had recuperated since, she confidently stated, “Definitely!” However, Jon contested this based on the study’s findings, cautioning, “Well, maybe you haven’t!” He explained that the research indicates it could take up to two weeks to recover from a single night of poor sleep.

The conversation took a lighter note as Sally humorously asked, “Have I been grumpy?” Jon replied in jest, “No, you haven’t actually or maybe you’re just consistently in a bad mood, I don’t notice the difference!” The exchange ended with laughter from both presenters.

The pair also briefly addressed the “dull” autumn weather, with Sally integrating weather forecaster Matt Taylor into the conversation. She remarked on the less than vibrant autumn foliage, leading into a discussion set to follow Matt’s weather update. BBC Breakfast continues to broadcast weekdays at 6 am on BBC One and iPlayer.
