Salt Lake City Marathon Set to Cause Major Traffic Delays this Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Salt Lake City Marathon will take over the streets this Saturday, April 26, causing significant traffic disruptions throughout the day. The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) announced that more than 200 intersections will be impacted by road closures beginning as early as midnight and extending until 5 p.m.
Most of the road closures will occur between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m., affecting areas most notably downtown, Federal Heights, the University of Utah campus, Sugar House, and Holladay, according to police.
“Motorists should expect significant delays,” police said, adding that the marathon will start on Wasatch Drive near the university and conclude at the Salt Lake City and County Building. The area near the starting line will close from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m., while the finish area will be closed from 3 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Specific closures include Sugar House Park Road from 6:15 a.m. to 11 a.m., 2300 East near Holladay from 6 a.m. until noon, and 2700 South from 6:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Police Detective Michael Ruff advised residents and commuters to plan ahead. “The route has changed a little bit this year,” he said. “We definitely want to make sure people are aware of the traffic impacts.” This year’s route will take runners through several neighborhoods and along key landmarks, including Federal Heights and City Creek Canyon.
The race will also feature accompanying events including a half-marathon, 10K, 5K, and a bike race, all of which will share parts of the same course.
In light of the anticipated disruptions, SLCPD encourages drivers to utilize alternate routes and adhere to officers’ instructions regarding closures and barricades. “Be patient,” Ruff urged. “There are thousands of runners coming into downtown this weekend. Plan for a little bit of extra time, and you’ll get to your destination.”
Additionally, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) will adjust bus routes and close several bus stops along the marathon route. Maps detailing these changes are available on their website.
The Salt Lake City Marathon not only showcases athletic endurance but also brings the community together, promising a day filled with support, excitement, and celebration.
