Samuel Umtiti Retirement Football

Lyon, France – Samuel Umtiti announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31 on September 19, following a career hampered by injuries, particularly after the 2018 World Cup.

Umtiti reflected on his journey in a heartfelt message, stating, “After living an intense career with ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye. I gave EVERYTHING with passion and have no regrets.” He thanked the clubs, coaches, and players he encountered along the way.

The former defender spent his formative years at Olympique Lyonnais before moving on to FC Barcelona, Lecce, and most recently, Lille OSC, where he played just 13 games over two seasons.

During a pre-match ceremony before the fifth game of the season against SCO Angers, Lyon fans honored Umtiti with a tribute that read, “Your values have made you an exemplary player. Thank you for everything, Big Sam.” Umtiti’s former teammate, Corentin Tolisso, was present to applaud him as he kicked off the match.

Umtiti’s career spanned 13 years at the highest level, where he celebrated numerous achievements including winning the Ligue 1 title, two Spanish league championships, three domestic cups, two Spanish Super Cups, and the World Cup with France in July 2018. His fans now affectionately refer to him as “Samuel biquette,” highlighting his legendary status.

In a somber twist, his retirement coincides with his former club’s challenges on the field, as they aim to rebound following a recent loss in the league.

Umtiti’s contributions to football will not be forgotten as fans reflect on his incredible journey.
