San Diego Zoo Welcomes Adorable Masai Giraffe Calf

ESCONDIDO, California — A six-foot-tall Masai giraffe calf was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park last week.
The calf, still unnamed, was born on Wednesday to mother Mara and father Gowen. Zoo officials say the healthy male calf weighs approximately 150 pounds.
Masai giraffes are native to Kenya and are considered an endangered species, primarily due to habitat loss despite having few natural predators.
The newborn giraffe will be well-cared for by Mara, who has been temporarily separated from the herd to bond with her son. As he grows, other female giraffes in the safari park’s South Africa habitat will assist in looking after him while Mara eats.
