Sandy Brondello Wnba Coaching News

TORONTO, Canada — Veteran WNBA coach Sandy Brondello is expected to be named the first head coach of the Toronto Tempo, according to a report from Howard Megdal on Wednesday. The announcement comes less than a week after the New York Liberty decided not to renew Brondello’s contract following a disappointing end to their season.

Brondello has a proven track record, having coached the Liberty to their first championship in franchise history and won two titles with the Phoenix Mercury during her career. Her experience and reputation as a player development expert make her a suitable candidate for the expansion franchise.

In her four years with the Liberty, Brondello transformed the team from a struggling squad to a title contender, guiding them to back-to-back WNBA Finals. However, after their early playoff exit this season, the franchise decided to part ways with her.

Brondello’s experience as a former WNBA point guard contributes to her understanding of the game and the needs of players. Her ability to foster a positive culture within a team will be essential as the Tempo prepares to debut in the WNBA next spring.

The Tempo general manager, Monica Wright Rogers, sees Brondello as the right fit to establish a winning culture from the start. Toronto’s expansion franchise plans to play in both Toronto and Vancouver, with some games also scheduled in Montreal.

Brondello’s hiring not only confirms her place in top coaching circles but may also trigger coaching moves across the league. Other candidates for head coaching positions include Kristi Toliver and Will Weaver as the Liberty continue their search for a new leader.

As the WNBA continues to evolve, Brondello’s history of success and strong leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Toronto Tempo.
