Sanitation Workers Join Teamsters Union for Stronger Representation

LAS VEGAS, April 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A group of 44 sanitation workers at the Republic Services Polymer Center in Las Vegas has voted to join Teamsters Local 631. This decision aims to secure better wages and working conditions for workers who process plastic materials into recyclable products.
Victor Mineros, Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division and Teamsters Western Region International Vice President, stated, “Republic workers nationwide are seeing that the only way to guarantee better treatment on the job is to join the Teamsters Union and secure a strong contract.” He highlighted that more workers are demanding industry-leading wages and benefits as they join the union.
The workers include mechanics, technicians, forklift operators, clerks, and equipment operators. They expressed a strong desire for improved pay and a clear voice in their working conditions. Tommy Blitsch, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 631, remarked, “This was a true Teamsters victory, and each one of these workers should be proud of their bold decision to join our union.”
The union represents workers in various sectors, including gaming, construction, logistics, and transit throughout Southern Nevada. Blitsch emphasized the importance of a strong contract that ensures respect for the workers.
Alongside these efforts, Teamsters Local 89 has also organized workers at Squirrelly LLC, a new carhaul company in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The recent push from the Teamsters led to the management’s agreement to voluntary recognition.
With a growing number of Teamsters organizing victories, UNFI facilities have seen over 3,000 workers join since 2022, further highlighting the union’s expanding influence.
UNFI drivers like Omar Correa expressed their motivation, stating, “We joined the Teamsters because we want what’s fair – better pay, better benefits, and a voice on the job.”
