Sarah Hyland Variety Courage Award Domestic Violence

Sarah Hyland, the 33-year-old actress known for her role in the hit TV series ‘Modern Family,’ has recently shared a poignant and personal account of her experience with domestic violence. While accepting Variety‘s first-ever Courage Award for her work in animal welfare and domestic abuse awareness, Hyland spoke candidly about the trauma she endured in her past relationship.

In 2014, Hyland was granted a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matt Prokop due to allegations of verbal and physical abuse during their five-year relationship. The court documents revealed that Prokop had exhibited violent behavior, including threats and an attempt to choke her. Hyland’s ‘Modern Family’ co-star Julie Bowen played a crucial role in helping her end the relationship, which led to further threats from Prokop.

Hyland emphasized the importance of discussing domestic violence openly, stating that for thousands of years, the topic has been shrouded in silence. She believes that by talking more about it, survivors will feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with loved ones rather than being isolated by their abusers. “If we talk about it more, more women — and men and just human beings in general in abusive relationships — will feel more comfortable to be able to talk about it with their loved ones,” she said.

The actress also discussed the long-term effects of PTSD caused by domestic violence, noting that the trauma can leave lasting scars. “It’s something that kind of scars her soul a little bit. It’s more so putting love towards that scar instead of hating it and ignoring it,” Hyland explained. She acknowledged the tendency to dissociate from the trauma but emphasized the need to address it rather than ignore it.

Julie Bowen expressed her pride in Hyland’s bravery and resilience, saying, “Without adversity, there can be no way to define one’s character and sense of self. Sarah’s path has forced her, from a very early age, to take on challenges — both physical and emotional. She has met each moment with determination, grace, and vulnerability.”).
