Sault Ste. Marie Snowfall Below Record Levels This Winter
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ontario — Sault Ste. Marie is unlikely to break any monthly snowfall records this winter, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell. The region has seen 74 cm of snow in November, 112 cm in December, and 54 cm so far in January, all below record-breaking levels.
“So far, we have not broken a record for November or December. In January, the average is 80 cm for the month,” Kimbell said. He noted that while snowfall has been significant, it has not surpassed historical highs.
Kimbell forecasted flurries for Wednesday, with snow continuing overnight into Thursday and additional flurries expected Thursday night. “The snow squall threat has passed for now,” he added, providing some relief to residents.
Current weather conditions in Sault Ste. Marie include a temperature of -19.8°C, with a wind chill making it feel like -32°C in the morning. The area is experiencing a mix of sun and cloud, with a 40% chance of flurries and a risk of snow squalls. Local blowing snow and a risk of frostbite are also concerns.
Looking ahead, the forecast predicts periods of snow with a risk of snow squalls, particularly in the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to remain frigid, with highs around -15°C and lows dipping to -20°C. Residents are advised to prepare for challenging winter conditions.
