Schools Cancel After-School Activities Due to Severe Weather Threat

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Several school districts, including the Little Rock School District, announced on Tuesday afternoon they are canceling all after-school activities scheduled for Wednesday due to an impending severe weather threat.
The decision comes amid forecasts from the National Weather Service predicting strong storms, potential flooding, and tornado risk affecting the region. According to school officials, the cancellations are made out of an abundance of caution for student safety.
In addition to Little Rock, Oklahoma City Public Schools and Putnam City Schools have also canceled after-school activities and outdoor athletic events for Tuesday. These cancellations reflect a regional response to the hazardous conditions forecasted in the area.
Thomas Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in North Little Rock, emphasized the seriousness of the situation. “Arkansans should prepare for strong winds, large hail, and a chance of tornadoes on Wednesday,” he said. “The potential for tornadoes is at a medium level, with hail possibly reaching the size of baseballs and winds up to 80 mph.”
While regular dismissal schedules will proceed, officials have advised parents that they can pick up their children early if they deem it necessary. In the event that tornado sirens are activated, the school district will implement shelter-in-place procedures and keep doors locked until the threat is over.
The Little Rock School District has reassured families that they are closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions and will keep them informed of any changes to the dismissal plans.
As severe weather is expected to impact Arkansas over the next few days, families are encouraged to stay updated through local news sources and the National Weather Service for real-time updates.
