PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia-area schools are preparing for a significant winter storm set to bring icy conditions beginning Thursday morning. The School District of Philadelphia announced that all schools, including Early Childhood Centers and the Constance E. Clayton Education Center, will shift to virtual learning on that day.
In addition, all after-school activities, athletic programs, and professional development sessions are canceled due to the anticipated inclement weather. The Archdiocesan high schools and elementary schools in Philadelphia will also close, implementing a Flexible Instruction Day for their students.
As the storm approaches, road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly. Travelers are advised to exercise caution if venturing out early Thursday morning, as snow is projected to start falling between 8 and 10 a.m. The storm will bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain throughout the day, leading to hazardous driving conditions.
“The weather makes travel challenging,” said a spokesperson from the National Weather Service. “Residents should stay informed and take the necessary precautions.”
Reports indicate that some areas could see up to 5 inches of snow before mixed precipitation arrives in the afternoon. The icy conditions are expected to last well into the evening, with the storm projected to wind down between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
As of Wednesday afternoon, numerous local schools and districts have announced closures, with the list likely to expand as the storm develops. Parents and guardians are encouraged to check with their specific school districts for the latest updates.
