Lewis And Clark County Search Effort

A 27-year-old woman who went missing during a horseback ride in Montana has been found deceased in a lake, local authorities reported. Meghan Rita Rouns was last heard from on Friday, October 4, after embarking on a ride in the McMaster Recreation area of Lewis and Clark County. According to Sheriff-Coroner Leo C. Dutton, Rouns last communicated via Snapchat at approximately 4:20 p.m. that afternoon.

The family of Rouns notified the police of her disappearance around 8 p.m. on the same day, marking the beginning of an extensive search. KTVH reported that her cellphone and horse were found a day later, prompting a comprehensive search operation.

Numerous agencies collaborated in the search efforts, which included the use of canines, helicopters, and drones to sweep areas of high probability. The concentrated efforts were initially focused on locating Rouns in the McMaster Recreation area’s lake, which had dipped into temperatures as low as the mid-30s Fahrenheit on the days of her disappearance, according to KTVH.

The search focus shifted on Monday, October 7, to the Missouri River section, based on strategic evaluations by search and rescue operations. Willy Wegner, operations lieutenant with the Lewis and Clark County Search and Rescue, relayed that the horse was found ‘just up the hill from the lake.’ The coordinates guided search divers to concentrate on Upper Hauser Lake.

The culmination of search efforts occurred on Tuesday when Sheriff Leo Dutton confirmed Rouns’ body was recovered from over 11 feet of water in Upper Hauser Lake. Sheriff Dutton indicated that no foul play is suspected at this stage. An autopsy is being conducted to ascertain the cause of death, with an initial theory suggesting Rouns might have fallen from her horse due to the windy conditions prevalent during her ride.

In a public statement, Dutton conveyed communal gratitude: ‘Her husband, his family, and Meghan’s family wish to thank all of you who helped search for her. You held out for hope and gave them comfort that they were not alone in this ordeal.’ The transition from a search to a recovery mission was officially marked by Monday, emphasizing the coordinated efforts made in the face of tragic circumstances.
