Seattle Police Capture Kidnapper, Rescue Toddler in Dramatic Afternoon Chase

SEATTLE — A 48-year-old woman was arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly kidnapping a 1.5-year-old girl from a daycare in South Seattle. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) reported the abduction occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m. at the MARS Early Learning Academy, located on Rainier Avenue South.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Quiana Marks, is known to the child’s mother and took the girl after claiming she was there to pick her up. When staff at the daycare refused to let her take the child, Marks reportedly grabbed the girl and fled in a gray sports car.
Patrol officers immediately responded to the scene after receiving reports of the abduction. As part of a coordinated effort among multiple law enforcement agencies, police were able to track the suspect’s vehicle to the intersection of Pacific Highway South and South 324th Street in Federal Way.
At around 5:45 p.m., shortly after the vehicle was located, Marks attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by Federal Way Police. The toddler was found safe and returned to her family at the SPD South Precinct.
“Police coordinated a massive rescue effort involving multiple agencies, including Guardian One helicopters,” said Detective Eric Muñoz, spokesperson for the SPD. “Every minute matters in a child abduction case.”
Marks was transported to the Federal Way police station before being taken into Seattle police custody. After being interviewed by detectives, she is expected to be booked into King County Jail.
During a preliminary court appearance on Saturday, Marks was denied bail, with authorities citing her history of reportedly threatening the girl’s family. Her bail has been set at $500,000.
Witnesses to the police chase described the scene as tense and overwhelming. “I saw a lot of helicopters circling the area. It was just an eerie feeling,” said a nearby smoke shop employee. “I saw 15-20 cops pull up, and next thing you know, they were pulling the baby girl out of the car. It’s a blessing she is safe.”
Another local resident, Michelle Murieuki, who was on her way to a nail salon when she noticed the police activity, said she felt relieved to learn the child had been found unharmed. “I just didn’t think they would get caught where I was,” she said.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping is ongoing, with detectives continuing to gather information and speak with witnesses. Police urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
