Ahead of the Biafra Heroes Day marked by the Indigenous People of Biafra, heightened security measures have been put in place in Anambra and Enugu States. This comes as the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Nnaghe Itam, deployed officers to schools in preparation for the event. Additionally, Enugu State government has taken a strong stance against the sit-at-home order, emphasizing the need to maintain law and order.

The Indigenous People of Biafra had declared May 30 as a day for honoring Igbo people who lost their lives during the civil war. The group urged the West African Examination Council to reschedule exams, but authorities are ensuring the exams proceed as planned. Heavy security presence is visible in markets and schools, with residents making last-minute preparations.

Customers have been seen stocking up on supplies and students are strategically relocating to exam centers. In response to the security concerns, the Police Commissioner in Anambra has bolstered security around school premises, particularly to safeguard students during the examinations period.

The spokesperson for IPOB, Emma Powerful, reaffirmed the sit-at-home directive, while the Enugu State government has urged citizens to go about their daily activities. Both authorities are prioritizing the welfare of students amidst the planned events.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has called for a nuanced approach to Biafra Heroes Day, recognizing its significance in history. Measures are being taken to ensure minimal disruption, particularly for students sitting for exams. The government is engaging with all stakeholders to maintain peace and order.
