Sentencing Delayed for Fashion Mogul Peter Nygard

The courtroom was tense on July 25 as former fashion tycoon Peter Nygard faced the judge for his sentencing hearing. Nygard, 83, was found guilty last November of multiple counts of sexual assault and is now awaiting the court’s decision.

His defense lawyer, Gerri Wiebe, is asking for a six-year sentence, claiming Nygard has already spent more than 1,000 days in custody. She suggested that each day in jail should count for one and a half days due to his age and health issues. This would leave him with just under two years left to serve.

Wiebe argued that a reduced sentence would acknowledge Nygard’s lack of a criminal record and allow him to stay in a provincial correctional facility familiar with his medical needs. She noted that Nygard’s chronic pain, diabetes, and other health issues should factor into the court’s decision.

In stark contrast, prosecutors are seeking a much harsher sentence of 15 years. The Crown is asking the judge to credit time served on a one-to-one basis, meaning Nygard could end up with a significantly longer sentence if the court agrees.

The sexual assault charges stem from allegations made against Nygard dating back to the late 1980s. During his trial, five women testified, sharing harrowing stories of how they were assaulted. One woman described how the experience left her traumatized for years, impacting her relationships and mental health.

The sentencing was originally set for two days but was delayed when a member of the prosecuting team faced a family emergency. Superior Court Justice Robert Goldstein has rescheduled the sentencing for August 2, stating he would like to address the issue as soon as possible.

Nygard will continue to face other legal battles beyond this sentencing, including separate sexual assault and trafficking charges in cities like Montreal and Winnipeg. After his cases in Canada, he is expected to be extradited to the U.S. to face more serious charges related to a lengthy pattern of criminal behavior.

As the proceedings unfold, the impact of Nygard’s actions on his victims remains a central focus, with many seeking justice long overdue.
